What is ASTM D6868?

ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials. ASTM D6868 refers to the Standard Specification for Labeling of End Items that Incorporate Plastics and Polymers as Coatings or Additives with Paper and Other Substrates Designed to be Aerobically Composted in Municipal or Industrial Facilities.

ASTM D6868 specification refers to labeling requirements for products that have a biodegradable plastic film or coating. It covers products that are designed to be composted in municipal and industrial aerobic composting facilities.

While it does not cover the performance of materials during composting, they must meet certain standards including disintegration, meet certain levels of biodegradation, and leave no negative effects on the process by which compost is used for plant growth.

This specification is specifically made to assess plastics and plastic products that are made to be compostable. It is also necessary to find out if these products can compost or biodegrade at a rate that is comparable to other compostable products and materials.

Several of our products including bowls, hinged lid containers, hot cup lids, and portion cup lids are ASTM D6868 compliant.
