Here we have listed and described some of the key terms used when describing our wide selection of products including descriptions of certifications and materials.
ASTM International: Refers to what was originally called the American Society for Testing and Materials.
ASTM D6400: Standard Specification or Labeling of Plastics Designed to be Aerobically Composted in Municipal or Industrial Facilities. Products with this specification can be composted in municipal or industrial facilities, and may be labeled as ASTM compliant.
Bagasse: The fibrous pulp material left after squeezing sugarcane that is used to create bagasse or a recycled fiber.
Bamboo: All natural bamboo plant leaves. Products made from bamboo are free from dyes, resins, and other chemicals. Bamboo products are made from the part of the plant known as the sheath. Once the plant matures, the sheath falls off and is collected, cleaned, and boiled. The sheath is then laminated and pressed into its shape to give us quality products.
Biodegradable: Products that are biodegradable can be broken down into materials such as carbon and water when exposed to air, water, or microorganisms such as bacteria. Refers to materials that can be disintegrated biologically.
Birch Wood: Natural birch wood. These products are made without the use of dyes or coloring.
BPI: Biodegradable Products Institute. This certification indicates that products can be broken down in commercial composting facilities. This certification does not cover backyard composting. For example, PLA straws will fully compost within 6 months in an official commercial composting facility.
Compostable: Compostable products can be broken down in industrial composting facilities into their raw materials. Compostable materials can also act as a conditioner for soil.
CPLA: Crystallized poly lactic acid which is made from corn starch.
Eco-Friendly: All of our products are eco-friendly to help businesses reduce their carbon footprint, and designed to put less stress on the environment. Bamboo, bagasse (molded fiber), and PLA/CPLA products are made from renewable and sustainable materials that are naturally replaced by the environment over time. Many products are compostable so they can be disposed of in an eco-friendly manner, while our PET lids are recyclable.
FDA: U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Our products meet the FDA approved guidelines for food contact.
Health Canada: Certification by Health Canada.
Hydrogen Whitening: Involved in the initial processing of raw sugarcane. None of our sugarcane products contain chlorine.
ISO 9001: This certification covers a company’s services such as whether a company’s services are a good quality for customers. It refers to a process standard and how an organization/business’ activities/processes affects the quality of products, not a specific product or service standard.
ISO 14001: This certification covers environmental management or how organizations may be trying to reduce the stress they place on the environment. Similar to the ISO 9001 certification, ISO 14001 is referred to as a process standard and looks at how the organization may impact the environment.
Kosher: Our products are certified Kosher.
Palm: Made from naturally fallen palm leaves. These products are made without the use of chemicals, dyes, or resins. In this process, palm leaves naturally fall off palm trees. This is referred to as shedding. Once the leaves are collected, they are cleaned by washing the leaves in water and applying heat to remove other debris. The leaves are then left to air dry and are stretched and flattened by hand. Heated processes are then used to bend the leaves to create our quality products.
Paper: Used to create our selection of paper straws. This eco-friendly paper does not contain petroleum and is compostable and biodegradable. Paper products are a great alternative to traditional plastic products.
PET: Polyethylene Terephthalate. Products containing this plastic will have a symbol with arrows forming a triangle with a #1 in the middle. It is 100% recyclable and non-toxic material.
Petroleum: Plastics are generally made from petroleum, natural gas. Products such as our bagasse selection are made from materials that are great alternatives to traditional plastic products and do not contain toxins.
PLA: Polylactic acid. PLA is made from corn starch and is non-toxic and renewable.
Plant Starch: Plant starch material resin. This is produced from corn and potato starch, making this material a renewable resource. Products are not compostable or biodegradable and are comprised of 80% plant starch and 20% polypropylene materials.
Recycled Cardboard: Used to make cup carriers. Recycled cardboard is collected and taken to recycling facilities such as paper mills where the cardboard material is shredded and turned into a pulp material. Once other materials such as wood chips are added, the pulp material is filtered to get rid of contaminants and de-inked to remove dyes or ink.
Renewable Resources: Resources that are naturally replaced by the environment over time such as CPLA products (corn starch) and PSM (plant starch). Using products made from renewable resources puts less strain on the environment.
SFI: SFI certified paperboard. This certification means paperboard used in these products has been sourced from sustainably managed forests. Materials were obtained using more environmentally friendly or responsible methods and not from sources such as illegal logging.
Sugarcane: Sugarcane plant stalks. Bagasse is a byproduct of sugarcane plant stalks after they have been harvested and is used to create our selection of bagasse products.Wheat: Similar to plant starch products, wheat products are made from plant starch material resin produced from wheat starch. They are made up of 40% plant starch materials and 60% polypropylene materials. Products are gluten-free but are not biodegradable or compostable.
